Eight-O-Nine

809 is an artist-run space that provides a venue for the discussion and dissemination of local, national, and international contemporary art. 809 aims to provide a supportive experience for the artists in residence and encourages all mediums and methods of art making. As another alternative space to commercial galleries, garage galleries, and government funded artist-run centres, 809’s approach to supporting art is flexible and almost bureaucracy-free. It is the aim of 809 to spread appreciation and initiate new and exciting art in Calgary.

The residency will host an artist or collective for a minimum of one month, in which time the artist or artists will have the space to their disposal. The end of their residency will culminate in a weekend long exhibition. The objective of which will allow the Artists a chance to create a small body of work, present their ideas through a series of monthly artist talks, and to present their work in a venue readily accessible to the art community of Calgary.

The installation space itself is only around 104 square feet, just enough room for an artist or collective to fill in the minimum 30 day timeframe of the residency. There is room inside the garage behind the installation space to act as a temporary studio or workspace for residency artists. If artists are from out of town, they have the option of sleeping inside the house on a pull out couch. Artists are free to use the kitchen, bathroom, internet, yard, BBQ during their time with us.

We also pay artist fees based on the timeframe of your residency.

809 is located within a heated garage in the residential community Kensington. Because it is surrounded by houses and dwellings it has the advantage of spreading the consciousness of contemporary art to a broader and hopefully unsuspecting audience.
The space is  super close (a 2 min walk) to shops, a grocery store, liquor store, parks and the Public C-Train which runs all throughout the city. 809 is also close to the downtown core, 5-10 min bike ride, or the very next stop on the C-Train.

Due to its location, the public are able to attend events quite easily.

Shawn Mankowske and Brandon A. Dalmer live within the house, while also maintaining studio practices in the garage. We are mainly painters (acrylic) although we dabble in an assortment of mediums depending on the projects we are working on.

We are both pretty clean, and tend to go out a lot. We eat and drink at home for the most part.
We spend a lot of time playing video games and watching dumb things on the internet.
